IOWA CITY, IOWA – The Grand Canyon men’s golf team climbed two spots to finish in eighth place at the Hawkeye Invitational on Sunday at Finkbine Golf Course.
The Lopes tied for the second-best round of the day, carding a team total of 282 (6 under par). GCU junior Matthew Polivka finished with a final-round 67, moving him into a tie for 19th place. Lopes senior Michael Salazar added a 68 and finished in 11th place.
Polivka and Salazar went a combined 10 under par on the par 5s.
GCU sophomore Matthew Braley carded a final-round 73 and finished in a tie for 27th place. Senior Trevor Lampson’s final round of 74 and freshman Craig Passmore’s 75 resulted in a tie for 59th place.
No. 43 Iowa won the tournament by five shots over Kansas. Marquette, Wisconsin and Toledo rounded out the top five.
Alex Schaake of Iowa captured medalist honors with a 204 (12 under par).
GCU is back in action at the WAC Championship on April 30–May 2. The championship will be held at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.

Salazar leads the Lopes in a tie for 21st place. Salazar fired a pair 73s, resulting in a total of 146 (2 over par). Braley recorded rounds of 72 and 75 to sit in a tie for 27th place.
Other GCU scores were Polivka’s 149, Passmore’s 156 and Lampson’s 157.
Polivka recorded the most birdies on the day for the Lopes with six.
No. 43 Iowa leads by six shots over Kansas in the race for the team title. Iowa’s Alex Schaake leads the field for medalist honors by five shots.
The 66-player field’s average score for the first 36 holes was 74.
