Lopes travel to Iowa City

The Grand Canyon men’s golf team heads to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday. The tournament will be held at Finkbine Golf Course, the home course of the Iowa golf programs.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

  1. ROUTE 66: GCU Senior Trevor Lampson turned in a bogey-free round of 66 (6 under par) in final-round action at the Cowboy Classic. He moved up 26 spots and finished in a tie for 14th place.
  2. FINAL TUNE-UP:  With the WAC Championship quickly approaching (Apr. 30 – May 2), the Hawkeye Invitational will be the final competition for the Lopes before the tourney that determines the WAC’s automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. GCU has sent individuals to NCAA Regionals but has not qualified as a team in the Division I era.
  3. RANKINGS: GCU enters the week ranked at No. 129, according to Golfstat. Other ranked WAC programs include Utah Valley (137), New Mexico State (146) and Seattle (164).

HAWKEYE INVITATIONAL

Joining GCU and host Iowa in the event are Ball State, Creighton, DePaul, Drake, Kansas, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, South Dakota State, Toledo and Wisconsin. The tournament will include 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. There will be a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. (Phoenix time). The last Hawkeye Invitational was held in the spring of 2019, when Iowa edged Illinois by six shots with a 43-under-par score.

LAST TIME OUT

GCU is coming off a ninth-place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. The Lopes finished one shot behind Oregon and ahead of tournament host Wyoming, UNLV and UCLA.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Lopes head to the WAC Championship on April 30–May 2 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
