Dembele became a free agent after his old contract expired on June 30. But Xavi persuaded the Barca leadership to keep the Frenchman. After a period of negotiation, the two sides reached an agreement, and Dembele decided to cut his salary by 40% and stay.

Despite the pay cut, Dembele’s new contract includes additional bonuses based on his contributions and performance over the next two seasons. If played well, the 25-year-old could make $10 million a year.

After his contract with Barcelona expired, Dembele was chased by a number of clubs. Chelsea, in particular, are said to be the most enthusiastic, as coach Thomas Tuchel worked with Dembele at Dortmund. However, the Stamford Bridge home side are prioritizing Raheem Sterling and the successful recruitment of the former Manchester City man has put them out of interest in Dembele. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern are also said to be interested in Dembele.

In 2017, Barcelona bought Dembele from Dortmund for a total price of up to 175 million US dollars, becoming the second most expensive player in the world after Neymar. However, the 1997-born player’s contribution has been rather limited, mainly due to his frequent injuries.

In the 2021-2022 season, Dembele only scored 1 goal and contributed 13 assists after 21 La Liga appearances. He will have to contend with Ansu Fati, Ferran Torres and rookie Rafinha for the spot.
