The Life of a Golden Eagle Fan

Ritchie fan article
I have always thought that Marquette Men’s basketball fans seem to be a little eccentric about the Golden Eagles. So Sunday night I created a muscoop.com account and began a chat room conversation thread. I got some strong responses, like ReneeWarrior’s, “During my four years at MU, I never wore underwear while attending a game.”This was in response to my post, “I’m a student at Marquette and I am planning on writing a feature story for a journalism class about people’s rituals before, during and after Marquette basketball games. If you have any in particular, please respond to this message. I’m also the Sports Director at MUTV, so if the article is really good I’ll post it on the site.”

Within 26 hours, my post had been responded to 25 times and had been viewed almost 900 times. Below are some of the responses from Marquette Nation, enjoy.

Stone Cold: Don’t really have too many continuous game rituals from game to game. Occasionally will move spots from where I’m sitting if we’re going on a bad run…..and I have burned a hat before that I thought was bad mojo.

MU_B2002: I don’t wear any Marquette t-shirts while watching games, and I took down my flag from the front porch after the SFU game. They had to earn that spot.

Warrioir55: Must have a large Sierra Mist the minute I secure my student seat…….only one more to enjoy

mugoose: each of the games we’ve lost this year I’ve failed to wear my MU embroidered chinos.

77ncaachamps: Head to toe in the MU Baby Blue for the whole season.

Baby blue is my favorite color, and who said it’s a jinx? Look at the season we’ve had!

MUfan12: I have kind of a “big game” ritual for games I attend in person. I wear the same blue shirt, MU sweatervest, and MU tie, and underneath the same gold MU t-shirt I wore to the Kentucky game in 2003. Was 8-0 until the UConn game. Bugger.

Brewtown Andy: As a season ticket holder, I wear the same Marquette bowling shirt/work shirt to every game. I got it on discount at the Golden Eagle several years ago. It’s gold in the front, blue in the back, it’s got a embroidered patch over the left chest side and a large embroidered “Marquette Golden Eagles” on the back.

Wade for President: No offense Brewtown Andy…but there’s a reason why that shirt was on discount.

Mu_hilltopper: I wear some gold MU shirt for both home and away games. Right now, my lucky shirt is the 1974 commemorative shirt, I had signed by Earl Tatum. When my wife and I drive to the BC, the first song we play in the car is CD 1, track 1: Ring Out Ahoya. I’ll often play the ROA before home games too. Oh .. and when a MU player is making free throws, I’ll quick look up at the guy’s point total, add 2, and whisper the player’s name plus two points. So, “Wes Matthews with 21 points” right before he throws his first FT. If he makes the first, I won’t say it again or I’ll jinx it. If he misses the first, I also won’t say anything other than swearing under my breath. Oh, and I swear a lot when MU leaves an opposing player wide open for 3. Does that count as a tradition?

Sir Lawrence: I stand the entire game when watching at home. Often turns into pacing. Scares the hell out of the dog.

Brewtown Andy: I’ll easily admit that the front looks cooler. I got compliments on it at the UConn game!

Spartan3186: Before big games and road games I attend I like to take a shot of gold shlagger

Garekis: While watching on TV, I always focus my attention on the Marquette players (i.e., I watch them moving on defense and offense, as opposed to tracking the opposing team players, on and off the ball). Not sure if that qualifies as a ritual, but it certainly is a contrived habit. I like to think my positive energy flows through the airwaves – not unlike the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil causing a tornado in Texas.

ReneeWarrior: During my four years at MU, I never wore underwear while attending a game.

JPJ4MU: I do the same thing. It drives my wife nuts.

Muarmy81: Ha Ha, I don’t stand or pace but I do move around when we’re doing bad. (Change seats if the other team goes on a run) i’m also very vocal but try not to swear now that I’ve got a little kid that’s getting ready to repeat some of the things daddy says but I laughed when I saw this because even if things are going well and I’m not yelling or fist pumping my dog gets scared, starts shaking, and runs to hide by my wife everytime I turn on a college basketball game…she’s an MU grad but hates watching games because of my scared dog.

Hards_Alumni: Get Bombed?

ReneeWarrior: Black Out?

4everwarriors: Strange, EAT only wears underwear on the days of games. Probably so as not to brown out his pants.

MU_B2002: My daughter, 19 mos, will mimic me when I yell “Yes or No” and will run over and hit her hand down on the ottoman, when I do so, in response to a bad call or play. Quite humorous.

Warriorette: MU_B2002 -Why do you have “boooo vols” in your avatar???? Just curious…..

Warriorette: I wear the same MU fleece, yellow turtleneck and blue and yellow MU scarf at every game and I have to have a chocolate frozen yogurt while the team is warming up. This year, before the UCONN game (which was held on Ash Wednesday), we were eating at Turners and my BIL insisted that I not eat meat so as to not jinx the team. The year that MU won the national tournament, in addition to wearing the same outfit (different than what I wear today), I had to eat the same dinner before each game and sit in the same chair during away games.

MU_B2002: That picture was taken at the MU / UT game and I changed the quote just after the game. I just never bothered to change it back.

KC2016: Visit the Brat Stop.

Secret of the Ouse: I like to get hammered drunk and after each game I go to Arts and get some nice bags of sand slapped in my face.
